How many times have you heard “find your passion”? I now know what that truly means. Find the thing, or things, a passion isn’t limited to a singular activity, that makes you feel better even on your bad days. A passion should be something that you look forward to putting in the hard work to get better at. It’s as simple as that.
I also believe that they are fluid- they are constantly changing as we grow and change as people. Don’t get caught up in “Oh, my passion used to be painting- what happened?”. Nothing happened- you got older, changed, and our interests are allowed to change with us.
For me, something that has helped me tremendously, in so many ways, over the past few years has been learning how to draw. Due to this, this has been added to my list of passions.
I remember the first time I decided “I’m going to draw” back in 2017. I picked up a pencil and paper and was horrified by the results. I wish I had the proof to show you, but trust me when I say anyone can learn to draw. I was determined to try my best and continue to improve. Although I was far from even mediocre at it at the time, I knew this was something that made me feel better, and that was the push I needed to keep trying.
I am a firm believer that anyone can learn to do anything if they put their mind to it, and if something makes you feel good, you will want to do it more. In the opposite vain, it’s important to not force things to be a passion when they don’t make you feel better. As an example, I really wanted to start running since countless people told me how much it helped them. However, once I tried, I knew it wasn’t for me, and that’s okay. Someone else’s passion shouldn’t influence yours.
For me, drawing is a relaxing activity. My mind is so focused on the paper in front of me that I can’t think about anything else, in a positive way. For you, that may an activity such as writing poetry, running, or making jewelry.
Work hard to find something that makes you feel good and work hard to get good at that thing. By no means am I a great drawer- but that has become that thing for me.
Once you start to find your passion(s), little by little your life feels easier and more fulfilled.
I know that both you and I have many passions to discover throughout our lifetimes, and it’s important to look forward to what’s to come.
Drawing cleanses the mind. I re-took it after 40 years. The hand remembers.
Stay safe
